CROWNINGS

Crownings is a creative response to the former Royal Women’s Hospital in Carlton and to the histories of birthing, women’s health and maternal care in the twentieth century.

The large soft sculpture has been created through shared actions of conversation, making and exchange. This participatory community project invited the public to engage directly with the artist’s creative process and become co-authors of the work by contributing stories and knitting alongside the artists during knitting circles over the last 12 months.

This project has been assisted by the Australian Government through the Australia Council for the Arts, its arts funding and advisory body. This project is also supported through the City of Melbourne’s 2018 arts grants program and the Abbotsford Convent Foundation.
